In words…

Underwater Hockey is played with 6 players from each team in play and 4 subs in the box. Both teams rush out on a strike and work to keep possession of the puck while moving it toward the opposing team’s goal. A point is scored when a player puts the puck into the goal. The puck is weighted to stay on the bottom of the pool. Players push the puck with small sticks that they hold in gloved hands. Read the basics below and watch the videos to learn more!!

Here are some basics about the game:

  • Played on the bottom of the pool
  • Players wear a swimsuit, water polo head cap, mask, snorkel, fins, and a glove
  • We use a small stick made of wood or plastic to push around the puck.  Experienced players can “flick” the puck to pass
  • Players usually hold their breath on a play for 15 – 30 seconds
  • Players may not “check” or run into other players like ice hockey
  • Players cannot hit with their sticks
  • Players cannot grab or push other players
  • You cannot grab the puck with your hand or block it with any part of your body, only the stick
  • Players can only hold a stick in a gloved hand BUT you may wear gloves on both hands
  • Players can go anywhere in the pool but usually play a position like forward, mid or back
